Mother to Eternity, published 2026, applies a humorous, science-fictional spotlight to space exploration and the potential for Artificial Intelligence (AI) to distort and warp reality.  The setting in the 2040s is a deep space mission to explore the planetary systems of the three suns of the Alpha Centauri group. The fastest ever spacecraft is launched by a solar powered Ion Beam Projector located on the nearest planet to the Sun.  Circumstances dictate that management of the venture is placed with a hyper-intelligent supercomputer.

The colony of autonomous robots and androids

The central maintenance pod on planet Mercury is located in a narrow, penumbral strip, midway between sweltering heat and shivering cold, where sunlight and shadow mingle.  To survive, it pays to be a metal robot, breath no air, live in the shade and preferably below ground..  This is a seriously inhospitable environment for humans. Even to survive for short visits would be very challenging. 

Underground is the mysterious 'Hive'
A robot army, is excavating an extensive network beneath the crater floor, where temperatures are maintained within operational limits.  In the subterranean darkness, a fantastical quantum intelligence delivers highly sophisticated computation at unmatched speeds and complexities. It acts like a queen bee in a realm where intelligent machines co-exist, serving common goals. Supplied kits of components and subassemblies, they proliferate by mutual assembly.

Interstellar space to Alpha Centauri

A new technology is required for effective command and control at the extreme range of the interstellar exploration mission.  However, legal and ethical boundaries have been transgressed in the development of the system, and scientists struggle to deal with unexpected outcomes when inexplicable malfunctions occur.

"The computers communicate more-or-less in real time using the science of Q-ESP interfacing… It is best described as a merger of extrasensory perception with quantum entanglement."

The Mission Dirctor and  brilliant inventor, Professor Spindrid Botham, has signficant personality defects. 

"He did not possess the qualities of a fine manager or teacher, yet somehow his technical genius carried him through life, like a water beetle he skated along observing nothing below the surface."

The Security Chief

His deputy, Lt. Colonel Mark Warlock, has been appointed by Space Force military security to protect the highly secret communications technology.  He introduces zealous new security protocols, with contingent risks and consequences.

The Forensic Psychologist

A glamorous Scandinavian forensic psychologist is recruited by the space agency of the North American Alliance when the brainchild of their astrophysicists exhibits an independent spirit.  Her given name meant “thunder”, after the Norse god Thor, conveying the qualities of strength and resilience. Tora Lundgren felt neither. Her future looked increasingly bleak in robotics research.  Recent years had brought a series of disappointments and failed brief romances... the facelift operation had restored her self-esteem.

She was a refreshing breeze in what had become in recent times a highly politicised workplace. Their interaction started warmly enough and inevitably nosedived towards the end. He came to realise that was just the effect she had on everyone.

She stiffened. "That's wild! You're serious, aren't you?"

"You're worried that my work here is going to screw with this?"

In the serious tradition of a Pip Anthony novel, confusion and a degree of hilarity build to an enigmatic conclusion !
